Knee Arthroplasty – Risks, Complications

The risks of total knee arthroplasty are essential: infection and deep vein thrombosis. These occur in a low percentage of cases (2-4%). There are ways to prevent them through prophylactic medication such as antibiotics and anticoagulants. Blood transfusions are also rarely needed today due to the widespread use of blood reuse devices.

The complications later usually have to do with the possible detachment of the components, minimizing risk by developments in cementing techniques. Although the placement of a knee prosthesis is not without complications, the degree of confidence in this intervention has increased a lot in recent years due to the excellent results and long-term survival that the prostheses have.

Knee Arthroplasty – Rehabilitation, Recovery

Knee prosthesis surgery usually requires a hospital stay of only 3 or 4 days, during which the rehabilitation process begins.  The recovery of the operated knee starts the day after the knee replacement surgery with active mobilization and lift supported by crutches.

Total Knee arthroplasty (การ ผ่าตัด เปลี่ยน ข้อ เข่า เทียม which is the term in Thai) provides rapid rehabilitation, allowing the patient to leave hospitalization with significant autonomy and safety in walking.

When the knee prostheses are technically well implanted, and if they are also well rehabilitated, the probability of obtaining a typical joint after knee arthroplasty is high. In this sense, after discharge, the patient must immediately start an adequate rehabilitation protocol to achieve full recovery.

Physical therapy after knee arthroplasty requires special care and should always be done under the supervision of a medical specialist knee (Orthopedic and Physiatrist) and a center equipped with all necessary equipment.

There are timings for recovery after total knee arthroplasty that physical therapy must know and respect. For this, the entire medical team and therapists must have the know-how and experience necessary to obtain maximum performance from knee prosthesis surgery, whose use has become widespread in the last decade.

How Much Does A Knee Arthroplasty Cost?

The price of the surgery varies according to the type of prosthesis to be used, whether a total or partial knee arthroplasty is performed, etc. The value of the operation also varies according to the patient’s health subsystem, among other factors. Only the orthopedist may, after evaluation in consultation, accurately estimate the value of the surgery.
